History
The first Sea Glass Ride took place on July 1, 2006 when 40 riders cycled from Swampscott to Gloucester and back. They followed a route Sue loved best. Riders stop at Stage Fort Park for a snack before heading back to the start in Nahant. The ride is now in its sixth year, and we are looking for sponsors. Please call 978-590-2536 if you are interested.
The 50-mile ride starts at Kelley Greens in Nahant and heads on the parking lot of the Nahant Causeway to Lynn Shore Drive and Swampscott, Marblehead and Salem. You will ride through historic downtown Salem to Route 107 and Bridge Street. The ride travels over the Veterans Memorial Bridge into Beverly, and then travels along scenic Route 127 through Beverly Farms, Manchester and Gloucester.
New this year: Rockin' BBQ with live music provided by Johnny Ray, food, drink and golf. Win a Trek bike, sponsored by Marblehead Cycle.
Special thanks to: Kate Kahn, Larisa Forman, Danielle Jacobs, Jacqui Lewis and the board of the Sue de Vries Cancer Foundation; Marblehead Cycle, Mike Sperling at Sperling Interactive for his website design, Tammy Cronin for her graphic design, Kelley Greens Golf Club, the Town of Nahant, the North Shore Cyclopaths, Ben Adelman for his bagpipes
Why we ride
We ride in memory of Sue de Vries of Swampscott, a mother of three, a good friend and a dedicated Pan-Massachusetts Challenge rider who died of breast cancer in April 2006 at age 44. She was an inspiration to us all. Sue started a wellness group with her close friends called Sue's Circle of Hope and together they started the Sue de Vries Cancer Foundation to carry on her work. The ride's goal is to raise awareness of the foundation.
